We took this course to better understand the challenges associated with zero carbon design that we feel that the industry should be moving towards. Although there are great guidelines such as those set out in LETI’s Climate Emergency Design Guide, it shows that we cannot simply wait for government legislation. Rather, we need to be acting now to ensure that all designs are as close to zero carbon as possible through the collaboration of other likeminded designers and clients to challenge industry norms.
Learning more about the Living Building Challenge was a highlight, and we will be keeping a close eye on how new projects meeting this standard are realised. In the meantime we will be thinking hard about what every beam and foundation we design means for our planet and how we can do better.
