What is good engineering? Is it an elegant solution to a problem? Is complexity made simple? Or is it helping deliver someone else’s vision? 

To Mike, good engineering is all this and more:  it’s creativity at its best. It’s not surprising that the engineer who had the biggest impact on Mike’s career was Peter Rice who led the structural design of the Sydney Opera House and The Pompidou Centre with his working being described as “greatly contributing to architecture, reaffirming the deep creative inter-connection between humanism and science, between art and technology.” 

Mike approaches every project with a question in mind: “Can it be done more efficiently?”. Either by adopting a doing-more-with-less approach when choosing the materials to use, or by optimising structural solutions to unlock the potential of constrained sites, Mike always looks for the hidden opportunities to deliver the maximum value on your project.

His experience spans from historic buildings, performing arts venues, large residential developments, masterplans and complex airspace extensions. Over the years, Mike has worked on high-profile projects including the Stirling-prize finalist Tate St Ives, Soho House in London, Queensway House for the Mary Ward Centre, and bespoke domestic extensions with equal passion and attention to details. 

Mike is leading our approach to sustainability and he is passionate about developing low carbon solutions using technology and creative problem-solving. He is a IStructE chartership reviewer, and an active member of the IStructE climate task force group. He regularly presents CPDs on retrofit, circular economy and maximising potential of existing buildings. When he is not in the office, Mike enjoys looking after his 3 children, dog, 2 cats and 3 chickens in the countryside, and is ‘enjoying’ learning to play life’s most frustrating sport….golf!
