Torpedo House
Kensington

The project comprised the full refurbishment and addition of a substantial basement extension of a grade 2 listed Victorian terraced property in Kensington and Chelsea.
The challenge of the basement was to form a totally independent structure to meet planning restrictions, whilst maximising internal space and causing minimal structural movement to the listed property. 3D ground movement analysis was carried out to verify the design. Externally the basement is buried below 1m of soil and the concrete slab steps around a 300mm diameter Thames Water sewer which remained live through the excavations works.
Internally the structure was sympathetically restored by retaining much of the existing fabric and providing enhancements using traditional materials where required whilst having a contemporary kitchen and staircase down to the new basement.
