AC Residence, Hackney, London

The extension and refurbishment of a 19th Century semi-detached house in the London Fields conservation area.
The project involved the addition of a new four-storey Corten steel clad extension, and lowering the ground floor and underpinning the walls to create an extra storey at the rear of the house. A series of cranked steel frames support the split levels of the house without compromising the space with internal columns.
A concrete pit is sunk into the lower ground floor to create a snug area. The internal space is flooded with natural daylight through double-height glazing at ground and first floors, and a beautiful exposed concrete staircase, cast in-situ, forms the centrepiece.
